is it really too much to ask to be fluent in a second language after practicing for 10 minutes a day for like a whole week

you wanna see some badass shit from the early 20th century?? The Lumière brothers created the first full color photograph… in fucking 1903! So these dudes dyed potatoes (in red, blue, and green), mashed them down into just pure fuckin’ starch, and used these dyed potato starches as filters to block out/let in certain wavelengths of light. They coated one side of a glass plate with the starches and sensitized the other side with a mixture of gelatin and light sensitive materials (silver nitrate) and loaded these plates in their cameras.. This is a really simple explanation of the process and I may have missed some things

I realized the uselessness of this academic language when, at 21, I met a farmer from my father’s village in northern Pakistan who was more Marxist than most Marxists including myself without knowing who Marx or Engels was and who was far more aware of how true love is achieved without rummaging through the letters of Rilke, Kierkegaard, Barthes, Derrida, Kafka, Carson, Atwood, more combined; who knew the difference between good and bad and the grey area in between without having read Jung or Nietzsche; who could tell you why the laborer feels lonely without picking up a manifesto from Europe, and when he was done shaming me into self-reflection (something I thank him for), he simply asked: “So what is new?”

The beginning of We Know The Way is actually in two different languages - the first verse is Samoan while the chorus is Tokelauan, one of the native languages of composer Opetaia Foa‘i. The English verses were built around the Samoan and Tokelauan lines, which roughly translate to:

We are voyagers called by the great god of the sea,
Who puts up a challenge.
We take up the good challenge,
So get ready.
Oh, oh!
There is land up ahead.
A bird in flight to take us there,
Oh, oh!
This beautiful land,
The place I was looking for, we will make our home.

In my bedroom, next to the door in front of a packed bookshelf, are six piles of books stacked three feet high. When my husband goes to sleep, he has to squeeze through the narrow path between the books and his side of the bed. About once a week, he will look at me with a disgruntled frown and ask, “Is there another place to store these?” And all I can do is give him my sweetest smile and say, “No.”

Our apartment is 750 square feet, and my husband share it with two little humans, aka our daughters, plus three pets. Lately my husband and I have been talking about how to increase the book storage in our apartment, which for me means browsing Pinterest for ideas. Yay!

Here are the results of my extensive research for the best book storage in apartments and small spaces. What do you do for book storage?

“Why do you take politics so personally.”

What if I told you

that these policies

affect me personally?

Sure sign of privilege if you think politics is just a game or a topic of conversation and not life or death.
